Dr. Shakeel Ahmed elected as Fellow of National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi

National Environmental Science Academy (NESA)
Aims and Objectives:
The main objective of establishing National Environmental Science Academy is to enhance and promote the studies of the Environmental Sciences by encouraging the Scientists and members of the ACADEMY for doing research work on environmental aspects.

The Academy organizes the chapters in each State of the Country. It holds annual conference in the prominent city within the country and symposium, seminar, meetings and work-shop at different places in India.
The academy also publishes such proceedings, journals, bulletins, newsletters, transactions and such other publications for the promotion of Environmental Sciences.

The Executive body of the National Environmental Science Academy consists of eminent scientists and scholars from all over India who work day and night for the betterment of Environment.

Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, basically a geophysicist, with significant contribution in the field of groundwater hydrology, joined N.G.R.I. as scientist B in 1983. He carried out his doctoral research in France on an advanced topic of Applied Geostatistics and obtained 3 degrees.
Dr. Ahmed has unique expertise of Advanced Aquifer Modeling and Geostaistics and supervised a number of master (more than 25 from India and 6 from France) and more than 17 doctoral theses including two French students, one Iranian and one Ethiopian.

Dr. Ahmed has also the experience of organizing and participating to a number of International events. He has been the Associate Editor of the Hydrogeology Journal published by Springer, member of the Editorial Boards of the Jour. of Chemical and Environmental Research, Jour. Of Science Technology Education and Research, Jour. of Hydrology Science and Technology, Chairman, South-Asian Regional Working Group on Hard Rock Hydrogeology of IAH, member of Steering Committee of the UNESCO’s GWADI-Asia program and led a scientific delegation to Tunisia. He is recipient of Young Scientist Award in Physical Sciences of 1996 from the MAAS, International Prize for Water Sciences, at Cannes Water Symposium, France in 2004 and National Mineral Award, Govt. of India, 2006.

It was his effort to set up the first Indo-French Centre for Groundwater Research (IFCGR) at NGRI in 1999 with BRGM, France that he is still leading successfully. He has led a large number of International Projects funded by IFCPAR, UNESCO, ACIAR, ANR, EC and IAEA on groundwater hydrology. He was therefore, invited to deliver expert lectures to many countries abroad as well as most of the organizations in India.

His main research interest is in the fields of Hard rock hydrogeology and groundwater management in F and As affected areas, development of optimal groundwater monitoring network using geostatistics for water level and quality measurement. He has more than 100 publications to his credit mostly published in high IF journals and edited four books and proceedings.
